Saucony ProGrid-sko til test
Jeg har netop fået denne lækkerbisken ind ad døren:

Det er Sauconys sko til løbere som overpronerer kraftigt – ligesom yours truly gør det.
Sagen er jo, at jeg har lidt af et Imelda Marcos-syndrom, når det gælder løbesko og har derfor efterhånden et meget fyldigt lager.
Det er der selvfølgelig en god og meget forsvarlig forklaring på: Jeg har nemlig ikke mange af den samme slags sko: jeg har til gengæld sko til mange forskellige formål – og det er jo noget helt andet.
ProGrid-skoen er en kraftig sko med en markant kile indlagt i sålen. Sådan en vejer godt til og derfor er skoen da heller ikke specielt let med sine knap 400 gram pr. sko.
Det er derimod en sko, der er lavet til de lange træningsture – når det ikke skal gå specielt hurtigt. Jeg har tidligere testet den gamle model, så det bliver spændende at, se hvordan denne nye model begår sig.

Vægttab á la The Caveman
Conrad Stoltz er en efterhånden legendarisk triatlet med speciale i Exterra-løbene, som er off-road tri hvor der køres på mtb og løbes i terræn. Han har fået øgenavnet The Caveman takket være sine 80 kilo og 193 cm – og ikke mindst hans brutale til gang til både træning og konkurrencer.
Han har lige skrevet et meget spændende indlæg på hans blog. Specielt afsnittet om hvordan man taber sig – Caveman-style - er et ekstra kig værd:
• Fat burning.
Everyone loves this topic, but this technique works for me. I learnt it racing in France in the 90s, somehow forgot about it (!?) and bumped into it again this year. (Hence all the veins) This works best during base phase, only do it once or twice a week, and not when you are feeling fragile. And definitely not before a big race. (or a big day at the office)
Step 1) Skip breakfast
Step 2) Drink a STRONG coffee. Pass on the sugar.
Step 3) Do a long, slow run. Or a long, hard run! (Welcome to drink as much water as you want)
Step 4) Upon completion of run, have some more coffee and try to delay breakfast for a while.
Step 5) Feast!
Expect some serious fatigue later in the day.
Her er det vigtigt at bide mærke i at punkt 5 “Feast” ikke betyder ”faste” – men betyder: Nu kan du spise det, du er vant til at spise.
Denne måde at gøre det på er bestemt ikke for dem, der ikke kan HTFU, men den virker. Dog kan jeg anbefale at indtage elektrolytter under træningen. Ellers risikerer du at komme i underskud af de salte og mineraler, som kroppen har brug for.
At metoden virker, kan man aflæse på antallet af blodårer, som pryder hans krop. Det er det, der i sports-jargon hedder ”At køre med udvendig kabelføring”:

Ordforklaring: HTFU
Når jeg korresponderer med min skotske makker John og rapporterer hvordan sagerne går, hænder det, at jeg kommer til at pive lidt. Enten om at jeg har ondt et-eller-andet sted, at jeg er droppet ud af et løb (eller bare prøver at forklare hvorfor jeg ikke vandt, men i stedet blev nummer 13).
Og lige så hurtigt hænder det, at John sender en kort besked retur. Den lyder:
“HFTU”
Den korte forklaring, på hvad det er forkortelsen for, er: “Harden the fuck up” - og den kan tages i brug, hvis du ganske kort vil sende en besked om, at nu er det tid til at tage sig sammen.
Der er få mennesker, som personificerer HTFU. Den tyske cykelrytter Jens Voigt er én af.
En anden kom fra John forleden dag på Twitter, med denne lille historie fra professionel cykelsports spæde ungdom.
Hovedpersonen er den italienske rytter Fiorenzo Magni:

Han vandt Italien rundt tre gange i slutningen af 40’er og starten af 50’erne. Men, siger han i dette interview, så var det ikke hans tre sejre, der tæller mest for ham. THE DAY AFTER I ASKED THE DOCTOR TO PUT ON AN ELASTIC BANDAGE INSTEAD OF A CAST BECAUSE I WANTED TO TRY TO RIDE THE FOLLOWING STAGE, LIVORNO TO LUCCA. IT WORKED! I WASN’T AMONG THE FIRST RIDERS BUT I FINISHED.
VP: There is the famous picture of your riding holding a piece of inner tube in your mouth during the 13th stage, the individual time trail of San Luca. Can you explain?
FM: JUST BEFORE THE STAGE STARTED I TRIED TO RIDE MY BIKE ON A CLIMB AND I NOTICED I COULDN’T USE THE MUSCLES OF MY LEFT ARM TO PULL ON THE HANDLE BAR VERY HARD. SO MY MECHANIC, FALIERO MASI, THE BEST MECHANIC OF ALL TIME, CUT A PIECE OF INNER TUBE AND SUGGESTED I PULL IT WITH MY MOUTH. THAT WAS A GREAT IDEA!
VP: Then, during Stage 16, from Bologna to Rapallo, through the Apennines, you crashed again and broke your humerus.
FM: YES, I DIDNT HAVE ENOUGH STRENGTH IN MY LEFT ARM AND I CRASHED AFTER HITTING A DITCH BY THE ROAD. I FELL ON MY ALREADY BROKEN BONE AND FAINTED FROM THE PAIN. THE AMBULANCE CAME TO BRING ME TO THE HOSPITAL. IN THE AMBULANCE THEY GAVE ME WATER AND I GOT BACK ON MY FEET. WHEN I REALIZED THAT I WAS BEING TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL I SCREAMED AND TOLD THE DRIVER TO STOP. I DIDN’T WANT TO ABANDON THE GIRO!
I MOUNTED MY BIKE AGAIN AND RESTARTED PEDALING. THE PELOTON HAD WAITED FOR ME, SO I ARRIVED IN RAPALLO IN A RELATIVELY GOOD POSITION. I HAD NO IDEA OF HOW SERIOUS MY CONDITION WAS, I JUST KNEW THAT I WAS IN A LOT OF PAIN BUT I DIDN’T WANT TO HAVE X-RAYS THAT EVENING. DURING THE DAYS THAT FOLLOWED I COULD HOLD MY OWN.
VP: You were even able to ride the Stelvio Pass (Stage 19)!
FM: YES, THERE I DIDN’T HAVE PROBLEMS ON THE CLIMB, BUT THE DESCENT WAS HARD. ON THE CLIMB I COULD GO UP AT MY OWN SPEED. AT THAT POINT MY AIM WAS JUST TO FINISH THE GIRO, NOT TO WIN IT OF COURSE. I DIDN’T WANT TO ABANDON THE GIRO IN THE YEAR OF MY RETIREMENT.
VP: Why did you have problems on the descent?
FM: BECAUSE I COULD NOT BRAKE WITH MY LEFT HAND AND I SKIDDED. THAT WAS TOUGH!
VP: Then there was Stage 20 from Merano to Trento, over the Costalunga, Rolle, Brocon and Bondone climbs. Pasquale Fornara was the pink jersey. That day 60 people abandoned! What happened?
FM: IT SNOWED THE WHOLE DAY AND IT WAS VERY COLD, I HAD NOT NOTICED HOW MUCH. ALONG THE WAY I SAW MANY BIKES PARKED NEXT TO BARS AND I ASKED WHAT WAS GOING ON. THEY TOLD ME THAT MOST OF THE PELOTON FROZE AND HAD TO QUIT. THEN, BEFORE REACHING TRENTO I SAW THE PINK JERSEY QUITTING TOO! ‘WHAT?? AM I SEEING THINGS?’ I WONDERED.
IF I WERE THE PINK JERSEY I WOULD HAVE CONTINUED, EVEN IF I HAD TO WALK, BUT I WOULD NEVER ABANDON!
VP: What happened next?
FM: WHEN WE WERE IN TRENTO MY TEAM CAR CAME UP TO ME AND SAID I WAS THIRD. “THIRD?!”, I WONDERED AGAIN. I WAS THIRD THAT DAY AND BECAME SECOND IN THE GC.
VP: Gaul won that stage and went from 16 minutes behind to winning the 1956 Giro.
FM: ACTUALLY, I THOUGHT ABOUT ATTACKING CHARLY GAUL IN THE FOLLOWING STAGES AND TRYING TO WIN MY FOURTH GIRO. I TRIED ATTACKING HIM A COUPLE OF TIMES DURING THE LAST TWO STAGES, BUT HE WAS TOO STRONG.
THE DAY AFTER THE END OF THE GIRO I WENT TO AN INSTITUTE THAT SPECIALIZED IN BONE INJURIES. AND THEY GAVE ME A DRESSING-DOWN! THEY SAID I HAD TWO FRACTURES - I THOUGHT I HAD ONLY ONE - AND FORCED ME TO PUT A PLASTER CAST ON.
THE NEXT DAY I WENT TO MY MACHINE SHOP AND ASKED MY MECHANIC TO CUT THE PLASTER CAST AWAY WITH THE SPECIAL SCISSORS HE USED FOR SHEET METAL. THIS WAY I COULD START TRAINING AGAIN.
